My Baby A to Z

Recently, I was provided with a copy of the My Baby A to Z Come Explore Shapes With Me DVD by Parent Bloggers for review. From their site:
My Baby A to Z - Come Explore Shapes With Me introduces the basic shapes in your baby's world. Your child is encouraged to move along with Moo, Beans, Sock Box, and friends as they learn, discover, and find the shapes. You and your baby can have fun together as you experience playful music, colorful puppets, original animation, and real life video from around the world.
I popped the disc into the DVD player one night after bath and pulled my daughter (aged three and a half) up into my lap for a viewing.

The show did a good job of identifying shapes as not only abstract concepts on a piece of paper, but rather concrete objects in everyday life. I found some of the puppet elements reminiscent of the show Roll Play from Treehouse TV here in Canada. However, I have to admit to being somewhat underwhelmed with the production quality. Some of the backgrounds took my attention away from the intended focus of the scene (the puppets). Some scenes felt disjointed and didn't really fit with the flow of the show. My personal favourite part was the music, which wasn't as childish and repetitive as most shows aimed at the toddler/preschooler set.

But the reality is I am not the target demographic for this show, so my opinion is somewhat moot. Instead, let's talk about what my daughter thought.

She absolutely loved the DVD. She got up and danced (even though she was somewhat tired and was in "wind down" mode before bed). She answered the puppets when they spoke to the audience. She even turned to me at the end and said, "I give it two thumbs up, Daddy!" complete with the appropriate gesture at the end. (I had explained that we were watching the DVD to tell people what we thought of it.)

To summarize: My Baby A to Z Come Explore Shapes With Me isn't necessarily going to captivate 30-something fans of science fiction, but it will be a hit for toddlers and preschoolers.
